Magento 1.8.1.0 PHP Fatal error

CLASS MAGE_GOOGLECHECKOUT_HELPER_DATA

We’ve just upgraded from Magento version 1.8.0.0 to 1.8.1.0 and now when we go to the configuration section of our site we see white screen with the following entries in our apache server log:

Magento 1.8.1.0 PHP Fatal error

PHP Fatal error: Class ‘Mage_Googlecheckout_Helper_Data’ not found in /var/www/html/magentodirectory/app/Mage.php on line 547

After upgrading one of our Magento development installs from Magento CE 1.8.0.0 to Magento CE 1.8.1.0, we experienced a conflict causing part of the admin config to give a white screen. This error was a predicted issue documented by the Magento core team and can be quite easily resolved if you have FTP or shell access.

Solution:

  1. Close the Admin Panel browser window.
  2. As a user with root privileges, delete all files except config.xml from the following directory:
    magento-install-dir/app/code/core/Mage/GoogleCheckout/etc
  3. When you log back in to the Admin Panel, everything works as expected.
